Rainfall below average values in the last 5 years

In general, the rains from October 2023 to January 2024 in the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins have again been below historical average values, hovering around 30% of the average in numerous systems, as collected by the Board in a statement. This situation, which is repeated for the fifth consecutive year since 2018-2019, results in minimum contributions to the reservoirs as, for example, in the case of the Guadalhorce.

Restrictions

Among the limitations agreed is, as a general rule, the prohibition of the use of drinking water for street washing, filling private swimming pools, watering gardens, public and private parks, golf courses, car washing outside authorized establishments, ornamental fountains that do not have a closed water circuit, showers and public pumps in the systems declared of exceptional drought and severe shortage (Campo de Gibraltar, Western Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce-Limonero, Axarquia-Viñuela and Cuevas de Almanzora).

The measure could entail foreseeable limitations for water consumption in nighttime stretches -approximately between 00.00 and 06.00 hours- every day of the week, with the exception of Saturdays.
"During these hours, it may happen that there are homes and commercial premises that do not have water supply, mainly buildings that lack a cistern, but also those located in high areas and further away from the main network in each municipality. The restoration of the supply will be carried out progressively from 06.00 hours," said the regional institution.
The Andalusian Drought Committee will reduce water consumption in the province of Malaga from 200 to 160 liters per inhabitant per day.
